Poythress named second team All-America

By on June 10, 2009

Georgia first baseman Rich Poythress was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Second Team.

Poythress was drafted in the second round with the 51st overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 Major League Draft on Tuesday.

He led the Bulldogs with a .376 average, 25 home runs and 86 RBI this season and was named a Louisville Slugger All-American and first team All-SEC. Poythress set the single season school RBI record this season and is second on Georgia’s career RBI list. He had four multi-home run games in 2009 including two three home run games, the second player in Georgia history to accomplish that feat.

The Grovetown, Ga., native is fifth on the UGA career home runs list with 43. He helped guide the Bulldogs to a 38-24 record in 2009 and the program’s first No. 1 ranking in the regular season.

Poythress was also named NCBWA District IV Player of the Year. He is the second straight Bulldog to win the award after Gordon Beckham, who made his Major League debut last week with the Chicago White Sox, was named district player of the year in 2008.
