Federal and state investigators are in Athens today to rummage through the remains of the Georgia Theatre to try and determine what caused Friday’s fire at the legendary music house.

Members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the state fire marshal’s office join the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department for today’s inspection. ACC Director of Emergency Management told the Athens- Banner Herald that foul play is not suspected, but nothing has been ruled out.

No other buildings were damaged in the blaze.

A message on the Georgia Theatre Web site read: It is with immense emotion that we sadly report the Georgia Theatre burned down Friday morning, June 19. There are a lot more questions than answers right now and we will do our best to keep the public informed as we learn more.

The Theatre stopped smoking late Friday, hours after the early-morning fire sent flames and plumes of smoke high above downtown. Friday afternoon and through the weekend the front doors were left open, revealing a charred interior shell, that much easier to see as the sunlight shone where the roof used to be. Clayton Street and Lumpkin Street aside the Theatre were closed to traffic.

Perpetual Groove, the band slated for a Friday and Saturday night stint at the Theatre, played a benefit at the Classic Center Saturday night, with all proceeds going to the Theatre. On Tuesday, The Whigs and Dead Confederate are performing at The Melting Point to help the Georgia Theatre staff, with tickets to the event $10. The Theatre has also released a new shirt to help offset the damage. Reading “Built to last … We shall return” information for purchasing the T-shirt is available at www.georgiatheatre.com.

The AthFest shows planned for the Theatre have been moved around the corner to the Morton Theatre. Lazur/Wulf, Hot New Mexicans, Marriage, Geoff Reacher, Deaf Judges and We Versus The Shark play Friday, and What’s Our Name, Gift Horse, Kuroma, Velveteen Pink and Immuzikation are on Saturday.
