Swimmer Schmitt qualifies for World Championships
Georgia’s Allison Schmitt qualified for the upcoming FINA World Championships on Tuesday with a victory in the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships.
The meet, which will be held from Tuesday through Saturday, will determine the members of the United States’ National Team who will compete at the FINA World Championships next month in Rome, Italy.
Schmitt, a rising sophomore from Canton, Mich., won the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:06.77. Chloe Sutton came in second in 4:07.20. Schmitt won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics as a member of the 800 free relay that set the American record and she won the 500 free title at the NCAA Championship.
In the B final of the 400 free on Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs1 Kelsey Ditto came in first with a time of 4:10.03.
Ex-Lady Bulldog Mary DeScenza strengthened her case for a World Championship roster spot as she took fourth in the 100-meter butterfly in 57.77. Current Georgia swimmer Annie Broome was fifth in the B final with a time of 1:00.14.
In the men’s 400-meter individual medley, former Bulldog Robert Margalis touched in 4:15.97 to finish fourth. Signee Andrew Gemmell was fifth in 4:18.46 and Bill Cregar came in third in the B final in 4:22.01.
