Sigma Chi gains probation following party that spurred lawsuit

The University chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity was put on probation after hosting a party where they served alcohol to minors and ignored risk management protocol, which resulted in severe injuries to one partygoer.
The underage woman who sustained the injuries filed a lawsuit against the fraternity, stating that she was invited to the party as one fraternity member’s guest and served numerous alcoholic beverages “to the extent she became highly and obviously intoxicated.

A team of students calling themselves “The Breakfast Club” have taken on the task of aiding the American Red Cross in its times of dire need.

Christine Reed, John Smith, Lauren Warbington and Jonathan Walker make up the club, though they bear little resemblance to the “Brat Pack” of ’80s legend.

Health care up for debate

bama’s August deadline for a health care reform package will not be met, University students and faculty are calling for changes sooner rather than later to what they see as one of the biggest problems facing Americans today.

Fazal Khan, a University professor teaching Public Health Law, said health care reform is necessary to improve not just the average American’s access to doctors, but to improve the country’s economy and standing overseas.

Hotel Indigo to donate to music business program

The project team of Hotel Indigo is giving back to the Athens community by donating $100,000 to the University’s Music Business Program next month when the hotel opens.

“We are very excited about the donation,” said Bruce Burch, director of the Music Business Certificate Program.

Former Bulldog women golfers faring well in pro ranks

Whitney Wade’s runner-up finish paced four Georgia Golfers who made the cut at the Duramed Futures Tour’s USI Championship in Concord, New Hampshire last weekend. Wade, a four-time first-team All-SEC performer for the Bulldogs from 2004-07, carded a trio of 3-under 69s to finish at 9-under 207 on the weekend.

Georgia swimmers add three transfers

The Georgia swimming program will be adding three transfer student-athletes for the 2009-2010 season. Sara Nicponski will be joining the Lady Bulldogs, while Austin Stahley and Matt Bartlett will be suiting up for the Bulldogs. Nicponski is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, who spent her first two collegiate seasons at UC-Santa Barbara.

More than 1,300 eligible for degrees at summer commencement

An estimated 1,315 students will be eligible to receive degrees at the University of Georgia’s summer commencement exercises Aug. 1 at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. The exercises are a combined ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students who complete degree requirements at the end of summer semester.
