Diamond Dogs excel in Cape Cod League

By on August 7, 2009

Georgia right-hander Justin Grimm is the latest Bulldog to be honored this summer as he was named Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Week while outfielder Zach Cone was selected to the All-Star team.

Grimm shut down the hot-hitting Western Division champion Bourne Braves, surrendering only one earned run in a 6-2 win on Aug. 1. In 7.1 innings, he fanned 10, scattered six hits and did not walk a batter. Grimm is one of five Bulldogs in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). Grimm, Cone and Jeff Walters all play for Cotuit, and they begin the playoffs Friday.

Also, Cone earned All-Star honors and had the opportunity to play in Fenway Park last month. For the first time since 1987, the CCBL held its all-star game at the home of the Boston Red Sox. Cone started in right field and went 1-for-2, collecting a double in a 3-0 win for the West squad. The game was called after five innings due to rain. A week later, the CCBL All-Stars returned to Fenway where they received plaques and were recognized for their achievements this summer before a crowd of 38,102 in attendance for the Boston-Oakland game. Cone is hitting .243 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 39 games and is 10-for-12 in stolen base attempts.

Overall, Grimm is 1-4 with a 2.84 ERA in eight starts. In 44.1 innings pitched, he has 47 strikeouts and 14 walks. Walters is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 innings pitched. The remaining two Bulldogs in the CCBL have completed their season. Cecil Tanner went 0-2 with a 3.28 ERA and three saves in 17 appearances for Falmouth. Lyle Allen batted .171 with two home runs and 13 RBI for Brewster. He played 19 games at first base and 15 games in the outfield.

In the New England Collegiate Baseball League, Bulldogs Peter Verdin and Earl Daniels helped the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats to the Western Division title while Chase Davidson saw limited action for the New Bedford (Mass.) Bay Sox. In 30 games, Verdin batted .296 with three home runs, 11 RBI and was 9-for-12 in stolen base attempts. Daniels went 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 15 relief appearances. In 29 innings, he struck out 33 and had only 13 walks. Verdin, an outfielder, saw action in the NECBL All-Star game at catcher. He had Keene’s best showing in the playoffs, but they were eliminated this past Tuesday. Verdin batted .455 (5-for-11) with a double, triple and three RBI in two playoff starts. Daniels made two appearances, going 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five innings.

In the Great Lakes League, Bulldog pitcher Zach Laughlin went 4-1 with a 4.50 ERA in nine games including four starts for the Lima (Ohio) Locos. Currently, they are in the playoffs after winning the regular season title with a 28-8 record. Pitcher Evan Tieles went 0-4 with a 4.35 ERA for the Albany Dutchmen in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. They posted an 11-27 mark.

The fall semester at UGA begins Aug. 17. The Bulldogs will open the 2010 season with a doubleheader on Feb. 19 in Waco, Texas. They will face Duke and host Baylor. Georgia’s first home game will be Feb. 24 when it welcomes Presbyterian to Foley Field.
