Be mindful of choice in parking on campus

By on August 10, 2009

Incoming freshmen at the University who plan to park their car on campus will have to be mindful of which lot they choose to park in due to recent changes made by Parking Services.

The East deck will be a pay lot and Parking Services has added more parking to the Intramural Fields, which will allow for more parking spaces on game days.

All students living on campus should know that on each of the six home football game dates, students parked in specific game day lots must move their car. The lots will be reserved for patrons who have purchased a football game day parking permit from Parking Services.

Freshmen who live in the high rise dorms and the Hill Community dorms will most likely be affected by this and will need to be aware of which lot they have chosen to park in.

The main lots around the freshmen dorms that will be affected include the Legion lot, Boggs Hall lot and Lipscomb lot among others around campus.

Students parked in these lots will be required to move their vehicle before 5:15 p.m. on the Friday before a home football game. Any vehicle found in the lot at 5 a.m. on game day will be towed.

“I didn’t like that I had to move my car from my lot on game day, but at least all I had to do was park in a deck,” said Kelly Hill, a sophomore chemistry major.

Free parking on game day will be available for students in the parking decks, excluding the Hull Street and Tate decks.

The new Intramural Field parking deck will also offer free parking on game days. Last year, students parked on the fields but with the new deck, there will be more parking available.

“We’re trying to get away from parking on the fields,” said Don Walter, manager of Parking Services.

The East deck, which was formerly for permit holders only, has become a pay lot with the same standard rates as the Tate deck. The East deck will be open for free parking after 4 p.m. on weekdays, as well as free parking to University students for game days.

“I have parked on campus every year since I’ve gone to UGA and I have always thought some changes needed to be made for Game day,” said Miranda Stancil, a senior journalism major. “I’m happy they’ve added more parking, it definitely shows they care about students’ needs.”
