Opinion Meter: A wrap-up of summer’s ups and downs
Our take on Tate
The newly constructed Tate II opened its doors at last. The $58.2 million building was completed after several years of planning and construction. Despite all the amenities it provides, we still think that the money could have been better spent renovating Old Tate.
Bye, bye Benson
The blight of the Benson Building is gone forever. Faculty and students of Women’s Studies hope that they will never experience the maladies that plagued the building again such as rats, flooding, and asbestos. Gilbert Hall is now the new and improved location of Women’s Studies.
“Make Momma Proud”
A date that shall live in infamy in the hearts of Athenians and students alike. On June 19, the legendary Georgia Theatre burned down due to unknown causes. Due to the unyielding support from locals Athenians and the local music scene, donations have been pouring in and hopes are high that the Georgia Theatre will rise up out of the ashes and be rebuilt to its glory again.
Complicating the system
A new Bulldog Bucks system no longer allows students to deposit cash at the nine “Value Transfer Stations” on campus. Instead, students must deposit money through Student Accounts or go to the Bursar’s Office. Although the manager of UGACard Services and Bulldog Bucks said the change is the “streamline” the deposit system, we think you shouldn’t try to fix something that isn’t broken. Instead of making things easier, the new system makes it more difficult for students to add small cash amounts to their UGACards for printing or copying.
Crime and deception
A convicted felon somehow slipped through the University’s cracks and still had a job that gave him access to students’ Social Security numbers. It raised serious questions about the University’s policy requiring all employees and most non-student employees to report an arrest within 72 hours and a conviction within 24 hours to the Office of Legal Affairs, University administrators have admitted its practically unenforceable. We hope the University finds better means of keeping tabs on those who have access to our private information.
Beware the decks…
The University is in the process of (recently completed depending on the date of publication) building two new parking decks, through the Hardin Construction Company. One of Hardin’s decks in Atlanta recently collapsed, and a walkway they were involved with went down as well. Since construction was already underway at the time of the Atlanta collapse, the University has taken several steps to ensure the stability of the new decks and the safety of the students.
More than just football
Who said football is the King? This summer, several Georgia athletes proved there are other sports too. Junior javelin thrower Chris Hill won his second straight NCAA title and promptly went pro. Gymnast Courtney Kupets won the Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete and has won a record nine NCAA individual titles (despite not competing in 2008 due to injury), and solidified herself as the greatest Georgia athlete ever.
Plus Ashley Houts and Trey Thompkins, made the basketball programs proud as each won gold medals in the World University Games and the U-19 FIBA World Championships, respectively.
