Running around time helps slim the freshman 15

By on August 10, 2009

So you’re on the meal plan and it’s all-you-can-eat, anytime of the day, at four convenient locations? Good for you, three cheese steak eater, but you know that will come back and hit you pretty hard in something commonly called the “Freshman 15.”

So, “how do I prevent that,” you ask? Well, not eating everything in Snelling is one way, but also you can keep in shape by getting out in beautiful Athens and running. Here are a few tips that will help you stay in shape and shed the pounds.

First of all, get out on campus with your MP3 player and start going. Start at The Arch and run through campus. This place is so beautiful, why not run between buildings, across the bridge looking out at Sanford Stadium and down past the Coliseum and around Foley Field?

For the outdoorsy type, head over to Lake Herrick and use the Oconee Forest trail. If you have a pet you can take them with you. Along the trail there is an off-leash area that they can run around.

If you’re the type that is serious about that top fit-body then the Mike Castronis’ Fitness Trail is for you. The trail goes around the Intramural Fields and Lake Herrick with twenty stations along the way to work out, including sit-ups, leg-raises, knee-lifts, side stretches and many more. When you’re through with the course you have gone a total of 2.57 miles while toning up.

Now, if you wanted to get on the track to keep up with your mileage and laps, the Spec Towns track will be under some new construction and will not be ready until November. But don’t fret, just head over to Ramsey and run around the indoor track that circles the basketball courts. It is only half the distance of the 400-meter track, but much cooler.

For those going Greek, run down Milledge Avenue. It’s a pretty straight line all the way down, and maybe you’ll get somebody checking you out. But be careful, it’s pretty uneven, so don’t fall.

In the end, no matter where you run or jog, it’s healthy. So get out and get some exercise anywhere in the Classic City, especially on campus.
