Top study sanctuaries

Miller Learning Center

With generous hours (it’s open until 2a.m. Sunday-Thursday), a coffee shop on the second floor and 500 computers available for student use, the MLC is perhaps one of the most well-equipped study areas on campus. For students who enjoy the buzz of people moving from class to class, the second floor offers couches, study tables and easy access to the outdoor patios. For those students who enjoy a more quiet environment, the third floor has a quiet “reading” room in which all electronics (including computers) are banned so students can study in silence.

Jittery Joe’s in Five Points

During the school year, Jittery Joe’s is packed with students who enjoy studying in the cozy, home-like atmosphere of this quaint coffee shop. Students can enjoy their coffee and pastries while studying at group study tables. The quiet humdrum of students at work provides muted background noise and the outdoor seating offers a break from long study sessions.

Espresso Royale Café

Espresso Royale Café is located just steps away from North Campus, making it an ideal spot for students looking to find a study spot close to campus. The café’s main room is well-lit and cozy for students who don’t mind a bit of background noise, and the downstairs space provides couches and a large table for students looking for a quieter setting. Aside from offering coffees, teas, specialty drinks and pastries, the café also serves sandwiches, soft drinks and several vegan items, making its menu comprehensive for almost any student.

UGA Main Library

Because the library is open until 2 a.m. during the school year, students looking to spend their nights studying will certainly find a niche in this study spot. Aside from being home to more than four million books and electronic resources, the library also offers hundreds of computers and a first-floor shop where students can buy school supplies, drinks and snacks. The library is a quiet study area, as noise and conversation is only allowed in the first floor lounge.

The Founder’s Garden

For students who enjoy a more natural study setting, the secluded Founder’s Garden near the corner of Baldwin and Lumpkin streets offers pristine scenery and the low hum of students heading to and from class. The large trees offer shade during hotter months. Students looking for a change from campus’s standard lawn and tree views can enjoy the patio and fountains in the less shaded area of the garden. This area also offers easy access to the library, the MLC and to downtown coffee shops and restaurants for students who may need a break from their studies.
