40 Watt Club

One of Georgia’s most distinguished music venues, The 40 Watt Club is a local legend. Home to some of Athens’ most prominent bands, it was the starting point for the B-52′s, R.E.M and Widespread Panic. The name refers to the first birthplace of the club in an apartment across the street where the only source of light was a 40 watt light bulb — classic. Different from other venues such as the Melting Point or the Classic Center and your everyday bar-with-a-band scene, the 40 Watt exudes the raw nature necessary for local musicians and audiophiles.

Farm 255

On the same block as the 40 Watt Club, Farm 255 is as local as one can get. The popular eatery prides itself on locally grown organic food and rich wines. This downtown restaurant conveniently possesses a full outdoor stage that was once used for jazzy tunes to accompany its relaxed atmospere and cozy diners. It has since expanded its patio to late night DJ sets, such as the frequent Baller’s Balls, and local bands, such as Mouser and Quiet Hooves. Farm 255, with its smooth lighting strung around the patio, makes a delightful venue to enjoy many genres and have a comfortable musical experience.

Tasty World

In climbing the music venue ladder, Tasty World is the first step, in many regards. The spot hosts the widest range of musical genres and is the most accepting of newly founded local artists; so, naturally, many score their first set here. Tasty World gets your musical taste buds flowing with genres ranging from, but not limited to, bluegrass, metal, electronica, experimental, rock, hip-hop, folk and funk. Recently undergoing renovation, the venue has converted its two stages into one, making the bottom a bar and lounge while the top level offers a scenic area with a view of downtown’s Broad Street, making it a tasty hot spot.

Caledonia Lounge

A hidden haven, the Caledonia Lounge has been known for its eclectic lineup of metal, hip-hop, new wave and indie-rock, yet it has noticeably swayed its musical preference toward the latter. It is tucked in a cozy crevice behind the 40 Watt Club and Farm 255; that attractive characteristic has made it a famous booking for both local musicians and national touring acts. For that reason, Calendonia makes a great spot for catching the buzz about tomorrow’s biggest bands.
