Defense forcing turnover after turnover
If Georgia’s defense has shown anything in the first week of fall camp, it’s that it may force more turnovers in 2009.
Each post-practice press session seems to have turned into head coach Mark Richt rattling off the names of defensive players who forced a fumble or made an interception, and, following Monday’s first two-a-day of the fall, it was more of the same.
“A lot of balls are being broken up by D-ends, D-tackles, linebackers, DBs, everybody’s getting in on the act,” Richt said. “I think we had 75 pass break-ups in the first six practices, which is a pretty large number. And a good many picks.”
Linebacker Darryl Gamble’s name came up yet again Monday, as the defense practiced penalty-free in the morning’s competitive drills.
Georgia’s offense won Monday’s 3-on-3 drill, while the defense took the inside drill and “dominated” the goal line.
Such a dominant performance may point to good things to come for the defense. But on the other side of the ball, it points to too many turnovers. Richt was quick to temper that thought, however.
“It’s getting turned over too much right now,” he said. “But the defense is doing a good job. And I would say the majority of the turnovers are with the No. 2 offense going against the No. 2 defense.”
“So the majority of the turnovers are with the No. 2 team, but you still don’t like it.”
INJURY REPORT:
* Freshman wide receiver Marlon Brown ran routes Monday, but did not catch passes due to a finger injury.
“The bone in the tip of one of his fingers might have cracked or chipped or something, nothing that will be an operation,” Richt said. “He’s running routes right now, we’re just not throwing balls at him. Probably by Wednesday we’ll be throwing balls at him I would think.”
* After sporting a green jersey during Monday’s morning practice, first-year tailback Washaun Ealey went full-speed during the afternoon session.
“He’s got a little elbow brace to keep . a little bit of a bend in it so he won’t hyperextend,” Richt said. “The brace won’t allow it. It’s a little sore, a little tender, but he wants to compete. He got hit a couple times and it didn’t look like he came back crying or anything.”
*Defensive ends Justin Houston and Demarcus Dobbs both donned green jerseys for Monday’s second session. Richt said that Dobbs’ situation was more precautionary than anything as he continues to come back from a foot injury, while Houston’s should subside by Wednesday.
“Houston had his shoulder, nothing serious,” Richt said. “Tomorrow is a walk-through and then a kicking scrimmage which he will not participate in. But we anticipate he will practice Wednesday.”
