Bulldog trio leads Cotuit into Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series
Georgia pitchers Justin Grimm and Jeff Walters along with outfielder Zach Cone have helped the Cotuit Kettleers to the championship series of the Cape Cod League.
Cotuit advanced to the finals with an 18-4 win over regular-season league champion Yarmouth-Dennis on Monday. Game one of the final best-of-three series against the Bourne Braves begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. This is the second consecutive year Cotuit has advanced to the championship.
Cotuit’s playoff run began last Friday as Grimm dominated the Wareham Gatemen in a 5-2 victory. In six innings, he allowed one unearned run on three hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Cone went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Next, they won a series over Yarmouth-Dennis. Walters, who has been a reliever primarily at Georgia, started the decisive game three Monday. He went 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen that picked up the victory. In four playoff starts, Cone has hit .235 (4-for-17) with four runs scored, two walks and three RBI.
In the regular season, Coutit went 20-18 to finish second in the Western Division behind Bourne (25-17). Cone batted .243-3-20 in 39 games while Grimm went 1-4 with a 2.84 ERA in eight starts and Walters went 0-0, 3.86 ERA in five appearances.
In related news, former Georgia catcher/designated hitter Joey Lewis signed a professional contract with the Kansas City Royals earlier this week. A 41st round draft pick this past June, Lewis has been assigned to the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League. This is the Royals advanced rookie league team in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He hit .282 with 19 home runs and 58 RBI for the 2009 Bulldogs.
Also, former Bulldog outfielder Matt Cerione was named Northwest League Player of the Week on Monday. He batted .500 (12-for-24) with four runs scored, three home runs and four RBI for the Everett AquaSox last week. He is batting .343-4-6 in 18 games as a professional after signing with the Seattle Mariners as a 13th round selection. He hit .291-12-43 for the 2009 Bulldogs.
