Athens boasts alternatives to typical night out
The Classic City has more to offer than football and tailgating in the fall, but many students don’t take the time to get acquainted with the lesser-known gems.
Although many towns offer outing options, Athens is home to some unique activities. Spice up your time at the University with these tips:
The Intramural Fields. Just because you’re not a Division I athlete doesn’t mean you can’t play sports in college. There are six tennis courts as well as nine fields for playing baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse and the quintessential college sport – ultimate frisbee.
Noteworthy/Accidentals. These are two exceptional a capella groups; Noteworthy is comprised of all girls and Accidentals all guys. They have several concerts a year – check for news and how to audition on ugaaccidentals.com.
The Observatory. The roof of the Physics building features an impressive telescope. Public viewings are hosted several nights a year to stargaze and learn the constellations of the night sky.
Dancing. You can dance anywhere, including your dorm room if you can’t resist the urge to move your feet, but if you want a chance to learn some swing dance moves, head to Memorial Hall Monday nights at 7 p.m. Check out downtown venues for salsa and swing if you are of age.
The Oconee River. Ben Burton Park and Sandy Creek Park are both a short car ride away and great places for hiking, playing in the river and walking the dog. Sandy Creek hosts a multitude of events including a monthly full-moon paddle ride in a canoe or kayak.
The Botanical Gardens. There is no excuse not to visit the Botanical Gardens. Located on South Milledge, it is 313 acres of astounding flora, fauna and walking, running and biking trails.
Ring the Chapel Bell. The Chapel Bell traditionally sounded during class changes, but now it is rung after athletic victories and other special events. Ringing it is a unique experience.
Herty Field. The site of the University’s first football game is a North Campus staple. Students can be caught at all hours of the day enjoying the fountain and playing touch football or capture the flag.
Gumby’s. A pizza joint with their famous pokey sticks and late, late hours for when you’re craving food in your dorm room. Enough said. Check them out on Baxter Street.
