Page 2 changes, we hope for the better
Take a look at page 2 of The Red & Black this semester and you’ll notice something different.
We’ve discontinued our use of the Associated Press, so you’ll no longer see blurbs about national and international news there.
Don’t worry. We’re working hard this semester to localize the bigger stories that have links to campus.
But for page 2, we’ve thought of a few ideas that we hope will appeal to you, our readers. Several are interactive, so let us know what you think.
1. Adopt a Dawg.
No, we’re not selling animals. Yes, we’re selling students – or at least their dating lives. We’ll start featuring a single student, listing qualities of the person and what he or she is looking for in a relationship.
If you’re interested in being featured or have a friend who needs a date, start sending in the information now.
2. The 3-minute interview.
With tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff on campus, there’s no end to the interesting stories that should be told.
We’ll use this space for quick Q & A stories about anyone and everyone, trying to ask intriguing questions from a student’s perspective.
If we approach you this semester for a 3-minute interview, please pause for a second and give a few clever answers.
3. You Aught to Know.
Some people wish they were hippies in the 1970s, others can’t stand the blue eyeshadow of the ’80s and still others are getting over the acid wash jeans of the ’90s.
We’ve all been guilty of watching the VH1 TV shows with nostalgia about past decades, and many of us can’t help but chime in about our favorite cartoons from our childhood.
Although we all grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, we students have experienced our middle school, high school and college memories in the same decade – the aughts.
As the decade wraps up this year, we want to remember the best in news, fashion, sports and entertainment. This box will let you know what’s new online from us, and we want your comments, too.
Tell us your favorites or not-so-favorites at www.ugatoday.com/blogs.
4. Where on Campus?
Speaking of nostalgia, whatever happened to “Where’s Waldo?” In honor of the hours we all used to spend searching for the striped-shirt guy, page 2 will feature a photo from an obscure place around campus that you have to locate.
It’ll give our photographers a chance to be creative, and it’ll give you a chance to figure out just how well you know the University. The answers to the puzzle will be in the next day’s issue of The Red & Black.
5. Help us!
Every now and then we have fun story ideas but don’t know where to start to find the right sources. If you carry around a unique lucky charm that helps you get through exams, let us know. If you have a funky name on a personalized license plate, let us know.
6. This day in UGA history.
Who doesn’t like knowing that the Lincoln penny turned 100 this month? Or that August is National Immunization Awareness Month?
The History Channel has a wealth of information about what happened each day in the world.
But you know what the channel can’t offer? A history of our own campus. Each day, we’ll flip through our archives and share what was happening right under your feet just a few years back or even decades ago.
7. UGA Today.
This section remains old faithful. It includes the time and place for many of the day’s activities on campus.
