Bus system adds to the fleet

Returning students may notice some small but significant changes in the University’s bus system.
The changes and additions were made to meet the growing and shifting needs of the University community, said Campus Transit manager Ron Hamlin.
Possibly the most noticeable changes so far are new buses on certain routes and another stop on East Campus Road.
“On the Orbit [route], we’ve added a couple [buses],” Hamlin said. “And one [bus and stop] on East Campus Express.”
The additional buses – paid for by student fees – were included in expectation of increased traffic on those routes because of the new parking decks on the East side of campus.
The two routes will also be extended slightly to reach the new decks, said Cameron Secord, a bus driver and vice president of the Student Government Association.
The new bus stop at the intersection of East Campus Road and Cedar Street is next to the new Greek Park – where several fraternities moved and are now living.
Its addition means the fraternity members living there have easy access to North and East Campus via the East Campus Express buses.
Trippe Ross of Phi Delta Theta said the stop was “pretty convenient” when waiting for a ride north to Peabody Hall.
The new stop comes as a result of a coordinated effort between different organizations.
“The changes come from a team effort,” Secord said. “We’re the beneficiaries of a lot of other people’s work.”
Trevor Brightwell, president of the Interfraternity Council, said Campus Transit was approached after some of the fraternity chapters expressed a desire for a new bus stop by Greek Park.
“We gave them the general vicinity. They walked the site and chose the spot most appropriate with the railroad,” he said.
There were also some schedule changes to some route schedules and day schedules. To view the updated schedules, visit the Campus Transit Web site at http://www.transit.uga.edu/route.html.
