Many Athenians have felt the significance the Georgia Theatre fire had on the music community, whether they first saw a band jam out inside or merely walked past the throng of people outside.

In an effort to help rebuild the center of Athens musical influence, The Athens Blur Magazine has teamed up with eCampusWIDE, a local social media site connecting businesses and students, to sponsor “Revive the Theatre.”

The event aims to assist with the reconstruction of the Georgia Theatre. This Saturday, 20 local businesses will donate a percentage of their sales all day to help with the massive clean-up efforts.

“Right now, we are focusing on phase one of rebuilding the Theatre,” said Jack Berton, founder of eCampusWIDE. “They have to get everything out of there for reconstruction, so that’s where this money is going towards.”

Eric Johnson, owner of Trappeze Pub, jumped at the chance to help when he heard about “Revive The Theatre” through other local businesses.

“I grew up in Athens – I’ve lived here basically my whole life [and] played in the Georgia Theatre myself when I was 15,” Johnson said. “It’s a nocturnal Athens venue and is a foundational music institution – that’s why we want to be involved and see what we could do to help them get back on their feet.”

Johnson announced that the Trappeze Pub will have special beers this Saturday to encourage people to swing by and support the cause.

The loss of the Georgia Theatre also hit close to home for Stephen Simmons, sales and marketing director at The Athens Blur Magazine, who also played at The Theatre during his band days.

“Coming from a music magazine, we feel the Theatre is important to music and even the economy,” Simmons said. “This also gives students an opportunity to contribute, since this happened over the summer when everyone was gone.”

Aside from these efforts, eCampusWIDE is donating an additional $1 for every user that signs up for the site, free to anyone with a UGA MyID account, using the referral code “REVIVE.”
