Butterfinger fan does FUNternship
They’re crispety. They’re crunchety. They’re peanut buttery. And in 10 days, senior Debbie Ebalobo will be the proud owner of a year’s supply of them when her internship ends.
Last month, after an intense screening process and several video submissions, Ebalobo was chosen as one of four Butterfinger FUNterns.
Stationed in New York City, Ebalobo spent her days distributing Butterfingers in Times Square, Union Square, anywhere there were people with a sweet tooth.
“When I gave it to them, they were really happy – even in New York City,” Ebalobo said.
She was working at a public relations agency in New York when she stumbled across a Yahoo posting for Butterfinger FUNterns.
The ad discussed having an interest in Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and YouTube. Her interest piqued.
Online, she promoted Butterfingers via the Butterfinger Twitter page, as well as by posting videos on Facebook.
“It just really spoke to me,” she said. “It seemed like a fun thing to do.”
And her intense love of Butterfingers didn’t discourage her either.
“I have a Butterfinger T-shirt and a Butterfinger hat,” she said. “I’m all legit.”
Ebalobo, who has since returned to the University but flies between the cities some weekends, is also responsible for promoting a Butterfinger video contest.
With friends, she makes sample videos to inspire the future winner of the $25,000 grand prize.
“It didn’t feel like work; it was very laid back,” said University graduate Sean Cuevo, who met Ebalobo at the Filipino American Student Association at the University.
Cuevo was living in New York when Ebalobo was there for her FUNternship.
“She’s really good at making videos,” he said. “She’s a very sociable person to be a social media intern.”
Cuevo helped Ebalobo make several videos, including a kung fu-style clip that had almost 700 views as of Thursday afternoon.
The winning video will become a commercial, and Ebalobo said the winner could be right here at the University.
There are four categories for submitting videos: epic fail, sweetest kung fu movies, best use of a gadget and workplace shenanigans.
“I feel like a Georgia person could win it if they wanted, so I’m going to try to promote it while I’m here,” she said.
