Rape charge dropped
A University student reported a known individual had sex with her without her consent at East Campus Village during an encounter involving alcohol between 10 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
According to University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson, the victim “came in and talked to [the police], and then said she didn’t want to pursue this any further.”
“This is a traumatic thing for anybody to go through, so it may be difficult for them to process how they want to handle it,” Williamson said. “Until you’ve had something bad happen to you, I think it’s hard for a lot of us to understand how you process the information.”
This is the second investigation into a student rape complaint in the past two months. Though the previous case proved to be unfounded, Williamson stressed these incidents should serve as a cautionary tale for young men and women.
“What I would urge all people to do is that when you meet people and you’re new in these relationships, that you communicate your expectations,” Williamson said, pointing out the detrimental effect alcohol can have on communication.
“It’s nobody’s fault except for the person who does wrong, but [alcohol] does complicate the situation,” he said.
