David Pollack talks Bulldog football, signs autographs

Whenever former Bulldog great David Pollack returns to the Classic City, you can be sure of one thing: he’s got something to say and he wants you to hear it.
During a promotional visit to the Georgia Federal Credit Union on Lumpkin Street Tuesday, the former Georgia defensive end chatted with fans and students about everything from fantasy football to his involvement with the GFCU.
“I joined the Georgia Federal Credit Union today . I didn’t know about it when I was a student here,” Pollack said. “You can do a lot of good things with the Georgia Federal Credit Union, and that’s why I’m here.”
Aside from providing financial advice, Pollack spent the afternoon posing with fans for numerous photo ops, proving to be a perfect opportunity to show off his keen fashion sense.
Apparently the Shiloh graduate has a specific requirement when it comes to his attire synchronization.
“I gotta match my shirt and shoes, man,” Pollack said.
All fashion tips aside, Pollack had no problem sharing his opinion on the 2009 Bulldog football team and what his expectations are for the upcoming season.
With the losses of big shots Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, Pollack has an interesting take on what the Georgia offense will look like in 2009.
“I think you see a different offense, it’s not as explosive but it might be more effective. We’ve talked about Joe Cox and how good he’s gonna do, but I want to see it now,” Pollack said.
While Pollack feels that the offense will be different due to some key losses, he mentioned that it is going to be the return of a stellar offensive line that may prove to be the Bulldogs’ main strength.
“I think the offensive line is so much better because so many people had to play last year, so now you can play ball control, especially the first game,” Pollack said.
As far as the side of the ball that Pollack is more familiar with, he addressed the criticism defensive coordinator Willie Martinez has recently received, and whether he or the players are more to blame.
“The coordinator’s always going to be blamed so it’s always going to be Willie Martinez’s fault over the players’ unjustly, but that’s the way it is.”
Even though Pollack did not want to place all of the blame on anyone specific, he was not shy about his displeasure with the 2008 Bulldog defense and what his expectations are for the upcoming year.
“Look at that defense last year, I can’t say they were good and that’s looking without any [subjectivity],” Pollack said. “They weren’t a good defensive unit, I think they’ve got a lot of guys coming back, they’ve got strong defensive tackles, strong linebackers up the gut, [and] a couple of key guys that you’ve got to replace.”
Pollack couldn’t get away without filling us in on his former position: defensive end. After being on Georgia’s defensive line for four years, Pollack wants the word to get out on a redshirt sophomore that he feels will have a tremendous impact for the Bulldogs in 2009.
“I think [Justin] Houston’s gonna be a guy at that defensive end position that’s gonna show some people that he can get after the quarterback, which is huge because you need somebody there,” Pollack said. “You lacked that last year from the defensive end position and someone needs to step up and do that.”
With the 2009 Georgia Bulldog football season kicking off this weekend, it’s pretty clear that David Pollack is one very interested alumnus that will be tuning in to root on the Dogs, and you can bet that he’ll be sporting some red kicks to go along with his red shirt.
