Beer of the week: Delirium Nocturnum

By on September 3, 2009

It seems some brown ale drinkers limit themselves to neutral flavor.

Certain beer drinkers are content tasting a subtle, sweet, malty and low-carbonated brown ale. Rarely do they consider stepping outside of their comfort zone and trying a hoppier, more complex counterpart to the traditional sytle.

For those interested in expanding their brown ale repetroire, the Belgian “Delirium Nocturnum” is a suitable starting point.

The beer is as rich as its history. Brewed in the same brewery outside Ghent Belgium for more than 400 years, Delirium Nocturnurm is a dark strong ale.

It is brewed with three different yeast strains and 5 different malts, all of which make up its complex assortment of raisin and dark chocolate.

When sitting on the palate, the taste becomes more fruitful and has a delightfully long finish.

This beer is also very well-balanced, making it somewhat more accessible to anyone used to traditional brown ales.

The Delirium Nocturnum has an alcohol volume of 8.5%. Despite the cost of this delicious ale, is regularly available at ABC Liquor, Tall Boy Package, Five Points Bottle Shop and others, as well as on tap at Trappeze Pub.
