UGA cross country opens new course
There’s no better way to open your newly designed cross-country course than against your school’s biggest rival. That is exactly what Georgia will be doing tonight when they face off against Georgia Tech at the course in Bishop.
This is the second year in a row that the two rivals have opened the season against each other, with the Bulldogs winning both the men’s and women’s races last year. Both are ready to get to the race.
“We have had a long month of training so it will be fun to kickoff the season and see where everyone stands,” Georgia Head Coach Jeff Pigg told UGA Sports Communications.
Ironically, the Bulldogs will be hosting its first of only two home meets this season, with the next one coming in two weeks when they host the Georgia Cross Country Invitational. The first 250 fans out to the meet will receive “Beat Tech” T-shirts.
Isner advances to third round at U.S. Open
Former Bulldog tennis star John Isner won handily Thursday afternoon in the second round of the U.S. Open, defeating Marsel Ilhan of Turkey in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
For Isner, every point seemed to hinge on his racket as he had 47 winners to 46 unforced errors, compared to 15 and 21, respectively, for Ilhan.
The strongest part of Isner’s game, as it is with most tall players (Isner stands at 6’9″), was his play at the net, where he won 74 percent of his chances.
Isner will next face the winner of the Andy Roddick vs. Marc Gicquel match that was completed after press time.
