Blue Sky bar offers quiet setting, wide selection of imports

The new Athens bar Blue Sky has plenty to offer – just don’t ask for a Bud Light.
Since June, Blue Sky has quietly entertained the Athens community with its wide selection of imports, lack of domestics and relaxing speakeasy atmosphere. The slightly upscale feeling combined with a comfortable ambience makes it the perfect new bar for grabbing a drink with a date or those nights when you’re going out simply to cure a lingering hangover.
The bar’s name, which pays homage to the former Blue Sky coffee company, is only visible to the naked eye in the form of small “B” and “S” metal initials on the back patio. The absence of signage and publicity makes Blue Sky a hidden gem in the Athens downtown bar scene.
Finding Blue Sky – above Taco Stand and accessible through the back end of Walker’s – is an experience in and of itself. The space, which previously housed an office, has a multitude of booths and seating inside and a partially covered outdoor seating area that overlooks the outside of Walker’s.
Kick back on the oversized cushioned lounge chairs on the patio while enjoying one of the 13 whiskey choices on the menu. Or settle in at the dimly lit bar with the Blue Sky menu book, filled with detailed descriptions of each beer available.
Though the length of the menu is equivalent to a short novel, don’t expect to find familiar domestic favorites in the vicinity, except for Sam Adams and Yuengling. Likewise, the lack of beers on tap may alarm beer enthusiasts. Well drinks start at $4.25 and beers at $3.50, and Blue Sky offers a happy hour dollar-off special until 9 p.m. each day.
In addition to its extensive list of imports, including a $67 beer called Scaldís Prestige, Blue Sky has teamed up with Speakeasy to offer menu items from the tapas restaurant served directly at the bar.
The slower paced atmosphere of Blue Sky promises to provide an easy night out without the obnoxious shrill of a freshman bar and, of course, without the Bud Light.
