Bulldogs pound away at FAU in 3-0 win
In its first match of the Georgia Nike Invitational, the Georgia Bulldog soccer team got back to its winning ways Friday night, defeating the Florida Atlantic Owls 3-0.
The Bulldogs put on a clinic in front of 1,751 fans at the UGA Soccer Stadium, but the 3-0 score line certainly doesn’t tell the whole story.
The Bulldogs peppered the Florida Atlantic keepers with 28 shots, while the Bulldogs, for just the second time in school soccer history, managed to not give up a single shot to the Owls, who made few threatening advances past midfield into Bulldog territory.
“It was a really good win. I mean we out shot them 28 to zero so that was really good,” said redshirt sophomore midfielder Alex Hooker. “We wished that we could have scored a few more goals but a win’s a win.”
Sophomore forward Jamie Pollock scored the first of her two goals on the night in the 14th minute, collecting a poor clearance by the Owl’s defense at the top of the 18-yard box and firing a rocket of a shot into the left side netting.
Hooker made it 2-0 for the Bulldogs in the 19th minute, getting on the end of a well-placed cross from forward Carrie Patterson and driving the ball past Owl goalkeeper Ashley Lantes into the bottom right corner.
Pollock netted her second goal of the evening just after halftime, heading a cross from defender Leslie McConnell just over the head of the Owl keeper.
“I thought our movement off the ball was really good and although we may not have banged that many clear-cut goals in, I liked a lot of the things we were doing,” said Georgia head coach Patrick Baker.
The Bulldogs next take the field against the Northeastern Huskies, who come to Athens after two decisive victories over Longwood and Cincinnati, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the UGA Soccer Stadium.
