The Georgia cross country teams breezed to two wins over Georgia Tech Friday at the Bulldogs new course in Bishop.

The women’s race kicked off the event with a 5K race that Georgia sophomore Kristie Krueger won in 17:42 for her first career victory and the only runner to clock in under 18 minutes.

Impressively, 14 of the first 15 racers to cross the finish line were all Bulldogs, including the first 11, with the first Georgia Tech finisher more than 1:30 behind Krueger.

The men’s 8000m run was much of the same for the Bulldogs.

Senior Bejan Abtahi led the Bulldogs to the finish line in just under 26 minutes, running a 25:59. Much like the women, the first nine runners to cross the finish line were for Georgia.

Both the men and women return to the course Sept. 19 when the Bulldogs host the Georgia Cross Country Invitational. The meet will be the final home meet for Georgia this season.

Isner’s run at U.S. Open comes to end with loss in the round of 16

Former Georgia tennis star John Isner is officially out of the U.S. Open, but not before making some serious noise.

Isner was bounced from the tournament in the Round of 16 by Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in four sets Monday.

For Isner, the match was one many did not expect him to be participating in.

Saturday night, Isner faced off against No. 5 seed – and many experts’ favorite to win the tournament – Andy Roddick.

Isner went on to defeat the three-time Wimbledon runner-up in a five-set thriller, propelling him into his fourth-round match against Verdasco.

After a Roddick forehand went into the net for the final point of the match, Isner collapsed to the court in an emotional celebration before being congratulated by Roddick.

Isner entered the tournament at No. 55 in the world and has said that his goal is to be inside the top 50 before the season was out. With his success in the Open, it is almost guaranteed.
