Test body composition at Ramsey Center

By on September 11, 2009

The dollar menu might usually be associated with fatty and greasy foods, but the Fitness and Wellness Division of the University’s Recreational Sports Department is aiming to change that this semester.

On several Mondays throughout the semester, students can have their body composition tested for only $1 at the Ramsey Student Center to help improve their overall health and track their progress.

“We provide body composition tests essentially to take the myth out of losing weight,” Stacy Connell, the assistant director of Fitness and Wellness, said. “Too many people just focus on the number on the scale. You could have two 200-pound men with different body compositions and only one of them would be considered overweight. The key is to know where you are physically, then you can gauge if you need to gain or lose [weight].”

Body composition is the ratio of lean mass, composed mostly of bones and vital organs, to fat mass. The goal is to minimize fat mass while maintaining a healthy amount of lean mass.

While there are several methods to determining body composition, the University has decided to use the skin fold test.

“We measure the millimeters of body fat at several different sites,” Connell said. “From this we can determine the amount of lean and fat mass with about a 4 percent standard error. For being such a quick test, this really is the most According to Connell, these tests should help students to better monitor their physical condition and predict when it’s time to cut down on the carbohydrates.

“It’s a really great service UGA has to offer and everyone with a dollar should come out and try,” Ari Levine, a personal trainer at the Ramsey Center, said.

The next body composition test will be offered on Sept. 14 in Room 143 of the Ramsey Student Center in between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
