Volleyball heads to Big Apple for tournament

By on September 11, 2009

Conference play is looming for the Georgia volleyball team as they head into this weekend’s tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Courtyard LaGuardia Volleyball Classic will pit the Bulldogs against Siena, Colgate, and Long Island.

The Bulldogs (5-2) have taken care of weaker opponents so far this season with their only losses coming to strong Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Duke and Georgia Tech.

“We pretty much know now what we have to work with,” McCartney said. “With SEC play coming up, we just want to stay healthy and make sure that we’re ready to go against Alabama [next weekend].”

One of the harder aspects of this season’s team is finding the talent to replace the production of Maria Taylor.

“Obviously we lost Maria on the court but we played all spring without her,” junior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez said. “We just added the freshmen, and they’ve been here all summer also, so we’re starting to get the feel of how it’s going to be.”

The Bulldogs get underway tonight at 5 against Sienna and have a double-header on Saturday.
