Another home game, another shutout win for Georgia soccer
There’s no place like home, especially when it comes to Georgia Bulldogs soccer.
In the final game of a six-game season-opening home stand, the Bulldogs gave the 1,864 fans at the UGA Soccer Stadium plenty to cheer about Friday night, defeating the visiting Georgia State Panthers 3-0.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 5-0-1 on the season and maintain their impressive undefeated home record. Their 5-0-1 record is the best start to a Bulldogs season since the team started 6-0 to open the 2005 regular season.
Jamie Pollock continues to have no trouble finding the back of the net, as the Bulldog midfielder recorded her fifth goal of the season Friday night, remaining tied with forward Carrie Patterson for the team lead. Pollock, who was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week Sept. 8, out muscled two Georgia State defenders before slotting a well placed shot into the right corner in the 14th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead for good, 1-0.
“[I've felt] more comfortable, more confident going forward, and just a better connection with our two forwards Carrie [Patterson] and Ashley [Miller],” said Pollock. “They’ve done really well connecting and they make it easy for me to get in behind and get to some of those balls.”
The Bulldogs netted the first of two insurance goals just minutes later. Lauren Glancy received a short corner kick at the top right corner of the 18-yard box and delivered a curling, driven cross that was headed by Georgia forward Ashley Miller into the bottom left corner.
With two goals already in the books, the Bulldogs seemed content to possess the ball and defend for the rest of the first half and much of the early second.
Finally, Patterson broke free towards goal but was taken down from behind inside the box by a Georgia State defender. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Patterson nonchalantly fired a shot into the lower corner to give the Bulldogs a comfortable 3-0 lead.
After the game, Coach Baker explained that although he didn’t feel the team had played their best, he is certainly pleased about the way this team has started the season.
“I’m excited about where we’re at, I’m excited for the players, you know, they’ve worked very hard,” said Coach Baker. “We were fortunate in a lot of different ways, and sometimes if you’re not good, it’s good to be fortunate.”
