Game Rewind: UGA vs. USC

By on September 14, 2009

PLAYER OF THE GAME:
Brandon Boykin, Georgia corner

Boykin, a sophomore, made two huge momentum-shifting plays for the Bulldogs against the Gamecocks.

His 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the longest in Georgia history, and tied the game at seven in the first quarter. His second -quarter interception was the first of the season for the Bulldogs.

KEY MOMENT:
Rennie Curran’s goal-line stop

With the Bulldogs up 41-37 and South Carolina driving, the Gamecocks set up for one last offensive breath on a fourth-and-4 attempt from the Georgia 7-yard line.

Enter Curran, who swatted down the pass from South Carolina’s Stephen Garcia, sending the Bulldogs into victory formation.

Said Curran: “The quarterback’s looking at his receiver, who’s right behind me, and he’s looking like he’s going to run across the line of scrimmage so I have to make a decision with about five yards, and I was just lucky enough to jump up at the same time and tip the ball down.”

KEY DECISION:
Sticking with Branden Smith

After freshman corner Branden Smith fumbled his first attempt at a kick return, it would have been easy for the Bulldogs to stay away from him.

But their confidence proved worthwhile, as Smith went on to score on a 61-yard end around and return another kickoff 48 yards.

QUOTE OF THE GAME:

Georgia receiver A.J. Green on his 34-yard reception between two South Carolina defenders:

“It was a flag [route], and I just saw it and jumped. It felt like a routine catch to me, but a lot of the people on the sideline said it was the best catch I ever had.”
