Women’s tennis trio open Dogs season
The Georgia women’s tennis team got its season underway this weekend, sending three members to the Southeastern Conference Coaches Classic in Nashville.
Bulldog seniors Yvette Hyndman and Lara Fakhoury, as well as junior Cameron Ellis made the trip, but Fakhoury didn’t participate because of an injury.
Hyndman and Ellis both participated in singles events and joined together to post a 2-1 overall record for their doubles portion of the tournament, with their only loss coming to Tennessee Friday night.
In singles, Hyndman finished with a 1-2 record while Ellis came out of the tournament posting a 2-1 mark.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Friday when they head to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
Butts-Mehre extension officially underway
The ground has been dug and tractors have been busy around the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall for weeks, but the official groundbreaking for the new complex took place Friday afternoon.
The new expansion will add 53,000 more feet to a building that already houses the football teams meeting rooms, locker room and weight room.
The blueprints include a synthetic turf-floored multi-purpose room (indoor practice facility), an improved weight room, a student athlete lounge, new coaches offices and a sand-based practice field that uses sustainable design practices.
The expansion is expected to be completed by May 2011. Baseball fall scrimmages open to all
The Georgia Diamond Dogs opened its fall practice on Sunday with a scrimmage at 3 p.m. at Foley Field.
The Diamond Dogs have tentatively scheduled 26 scrimmages throughout the fall, and all are free to the public.
The Dawgs-Pups World Series will be Oct. 4 to 11.
