Women golfers ‘as good as it has ever been’
Dominant.
That’s about the only word that could describe the No. 14 Georgia women’s golf team’s performance on Monday at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.
The Bulldogs rewrote the school record books for a tournament total by six shots at 14-under-par – a record they set just last year at the Cougar Classic.
“Out of all the wonderful players that have played here, this is as good as it has ever been, and they should really enjoy that,” head coach Kelley Hester told her team after defending its championship Monday.
“And I think it shows that we have a group that’s very capable of doing some great things this season. We literally were pretty dominant, and I think it bodes well for the future.”
Defending SEC Champion Marta Silva Zamora continued to establish herself as perhaps the premier player in women’s college golf.
Silva Zamora made a birdie on the final hole to secure a one-shot win – her third as a Bulldog – at 8-under-par 208, which is tied for the third-best score in school history with Vicki Goetze.
“Marta is just really good,” Hester said of her star sophomore. “When Marta is on her game, there are not many players better than her in college golf.
“I think she’s going to leave Georgia as one of the most decorated players we’ve ever had. This is already her third win, and she is only two tournaments into her sophomore year. She’s really that good.”
For Silva Zamora, it was quite the weekend for her, as well as her teammates.
“We won everything,” Silva Zamora said. “It was great – it was a good weekend.”
Freshman Emilie Burger, following a first-round 5-under-par 67, finished impressively in a tie for third at 4-under-par 212, leading her coach to say, “she doesn’t play like a freshman, so I expect to continue getting really strong things from her.”
Milena Savich, a sophomore transfer from Michigan, played excellent again, posting a tie for fifth place at 3-under-par.
“We got a very solid performance from Milena Savich,” Hester said. “She led us at the Hooters, and she finished top five here.”
Senior Carolina Andrade was steady all weekend, posting a tie for 16th with rounds of 74-69-75. Sophomore Tess Fordham finished in a tie for 56th.
The Bulldogs continued their birdie barrage on Yeamans Hall Golf Club for the second straight year, making 53 birdies and one eagle over the course of the event to rewrite the record books once again and defend as champions.
“That’s great,” Silva Zamora said of their record-setting play. “It looks like we like this course. I have no idea, we just treat it like a normal golf course, but I guess we might feel comfortable here.”
Added Hester: “It is just a really unique atmosphere, very old golf course, and you stay in old cottages right there. It’s a really neat place, and I think our kids feel very comfortable there,”
The Bulldogs’ early season win continues to prove the importance of their depth that was added in the offseason.
The Bulldogs added three freshmen and two sophomore transfers, who continue to prove more than capable of handling the loss of former All-SEC player Mallory Hetzel, who graduated in May and is now on the Futures Tour.
“We have 10 players on the team, and I’d say that we really have eight that I think could be in the lineup at any time this year,” Hester said of her team’s improved depth.
“It is 100 percent different from last year. The kids that are home know they are going to have to work hard to get in the lineup, and the kids on the road know they have to work hard to stay . . . I think competition between a team is necessary for improvement.”
