As if bragging rights and winning one of college football’s most heated divisions in the best conference in the country wasn’t enough at stake when Georgia, Florida and Tennessee battle in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division this year, they will also do so with some of the nation’s best recruits intensely looking on.

And no prospect is that more evident with than Cody Riggs, a talented, speedy cornerback prospect from the perennial powerhouse of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who says he is currently looking at Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Florida State.

With the college football season underway, Riggs says he has kept a close eye on each of his finalists.

“I definitely look at who each school has signed and how their team is doing during the season,” he said.

Despite Georgia’s season-opening loss to Oklahoma State, Riggs sees the high potential of the Bulldogs and has definitely taken notice of the emergence of true freshmen, such as Branden Smith and Orson Charles.

“I’m kind of disappointed they lost to Oklahoma State, but I think they’re a young team and they’re trying to find themselves, so I think they’ll be alright next year,” he said.

With freshmen contributing all over the field for the Bulldogs, Riggs said he has taken notice, and it was important for him to see freshman on the field early.

“Yeah, I definitely noticed how many young players they are playing,” Riggs said. “I like to see that they’re giving those young guys play, so that’s a big plus for me.”

Riggs says the Georgia coaches have been showing consistent interest and are writing him all the time, and they envision him contributing as a freshman, playing corner and helping early with returning kicks.

“I really like [defensive coordinator]coach [Willie] Martinez and coach Richt. Everybody likes Coach Richt and they’re real nice coaches and they’re real easy to talk to,” Riggs said. “I’ve really enjoyed speaking with coach Martinez on the phone. We can always just joke around about stuff and I can definitely see myself playing for him.”

After visiting Knoxville last weekend to get a look at Tennessee, Riggs will take-in Florida this weekend and will be in attendance for their much anticipated date with the Volunteers.

“I just got back from Tennessee, and I’m going to Florida this weekend,” Riggs said of his fall official visits. “I’m going to visit Georgia for the LSU game. I’m going to Notre Dame October 17, and I’m not sure when I’ll visit FSU yet.”

Riggs isn’t sure just yet when he will make his decision.

In the meantime, Riggs’ attention will be with his high school team, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today.

“The high school season is going real good,” Riggs said. “We struggled a little bit on Friday, but that was our first test. We’re just kind of trying to find ourselves right now.”
