Riders ready to defend title

By on September 18, 2009

The defending National Champion Georgia equestrian team will begin its defense of the title this weekend at the Georgia Equestrian Complex in Bishop.

The Bulldogs are set to host two teams from Texas when they welcome Texas Christian on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Southern Methodist Sunday at noon.

Though Georgia is set to defend its title from last season, this weekend will be more about revenge for the Bulldogs.

Last season, Georgia lost to both of this weekends competitors as the Bulldogs took a 3-day trip through Texas.

Admission is free and fans will receive schedule magnets, and a free “Striding for Five” T-shirt and other prizes.

Women’s basketball looking for a few good men

It has become tradition that women’s basketball programs at major colleges will have male players to practice against to have tougher competition and more physicality.

Well, the Lady Dogs are no different, and they are looking for quality male players to contact the coaching offices to learn more about rubbing elbows with the likes of seniors Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson.

The coaching staff is looking for players to scrimmage against the team on a daily basis. The amount of practice time each day may vary.

To be eligible, you must be considered a full-time UGA student (enrolled in at least 12 hours for most degree programs). Per NCAA rules, participating players will receive team practice gear.

“I really enjoyed being a practice player last season,” said Seth Buchwald, a senior from Atlanta who is returning to the same role as a year ago. “It’s enjoyable to watch the games and see them execute things that we worked on in practice. The coaches and the staff are very nice and treat us very well.”

Women’s tennis heads to Atlanta

Five members of the women’s tennis team will make the short 60-mile trek down the road to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational during the weekend.

The Bulldogs will be led by the No. 2 player in the nation and last season’s International Tennis Association’s National Rookie of the Year Chelsey Gullickson.
