The Georgia volleyball team wrapped up out-of-conference play on Wednesday night with a four-set win against Western Carolina.

After opening the match with a dominating first set win – 25-15 – the Bulldogs (10-3) edged out the Catamounts in the second set by a much closer score of 25-23.

“We came out and established a really nice spirit for this match in the first set and finished the match the same exact way,” said head coach Joel McCartney. “We kind of hit the bookends with the right attitude and feel good about that.”

Western Carolina (3-11)avoided the sweep by posting an impressive .355 hitting percentage in a decisive third set.

Catamount senior Amanda Kerr posted seven kills in the third set on the way to a 25-21 set win.

The third set proved to be the closest of the night with 10 ties and six lead changes, as the Bulldogs were forced into a fourth set.

“It’s very difficult sometimes to play a non-conference team in the midst of a conference season,” McCartney said.

The Bulldogs regained their intensity to put the Catamounts away in the fourth by a score of 25-16.

Junior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez led Georgia with 15 kills and eight blocks.

“I learned that I get blocked just as much as everyone else,” Gonzalez said. “If somebody blocks me, I just let it go and take things point by point.”
