THE SMALL PICTURE: Estep and Page take UGA vs. ASU a level deeper
TALENT VS. KNOW-HOW Yes, Arizona State has played Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe, with a bye-week in between, this season.
But the Sun Devils return a striking 24 seniors which means experience, complete understanding and knowing what it takes to win on the road. Georgia counters with explosive players, most of whom are underclassmen.
RICHARD SAMUEL VS. CALEB KING Samuel hit the home run against Arkansas, in the form of an 80-yard touchdown rush. But he also fumbled twice and compiled only 26 yards on his other 15 carries. Meanwhile, Caleb King looked smooth in his season-debut and said his hamstring is finally 100 percent.
King averaged 5.4 yards a carry and the coaches trusted him enough to have him in the game on third downs in the fourth quarter. This could be a wonderful tandem effort, but there are only so many carries to go around. When the game is on the line, who carries the ball could be determined by who is enjoying the better day, not just rushing, but also pass blocking and receiving. This position battle should linger this season, and even next.
WILLIE MARTINEZ VS. THE GEORGIA FAN BASE You’ve all heard it: He blitzes when he should sit back. He sits back when he should blitz. He goes man coverage when he should be in zone. He’s in zone when he should be in man coverage.
Right or wrong, the Georgia fan base is not happy with defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. Coach Richt is standing by Willie, and said that they’re not hearing the criticism – they’re too busy gameplanning over 80 hours a week.
Willie’s defense needs to have a solid game with no mess ups in coverage, etc. in order to try and get the fan base off his back, and hit the upcoming SEC stretch of LSU, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Florida going strong.
DANNY SULLIVAN VS. THE BELEAGUERED GEORGIA SECONDARY Arizona State quarterback Danny Sullivan, a senior, won his first two games as a starter. But they don’t count (Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe.) This is the first true test for Sullivan, who is in a similar situation to Georgia quarterback Joe Cox. Sullivan waited patiently behind long-time starter Rudy Carpenter, and this is now his team. The Georgia secondary is coming off a tough Arkansas win, giving up 408 yards and five touchdowns. The Bulldog safeties and corners have said they are eager to show pass defense isn’t the weakness of the team, and Sullivan will be amped up to prove he can lead a team at quarterback.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN DEXTER DAVIS VS. VINCENT VANCE Defensive end Dexter Davis is the only returning player in the nation who recorded double-digit sacks in each of the past two seasons (10.5 in 2007 and 11 in ’08.) Davis sits fourth on ASU’s all-time sack list, and has started 40 games. He’ll be going up against Vince Vance, the 6-foot-8, 325-pound tackle, who replaced the injured Trinton Sturdivant. Georgia may elect to use a tight end or running back to help, but the added attention could cause a breakdown elsewhere along the trenches. Expect Davis to be in the Georgia backfield, it’s up to Vance to limit his opportunities to get quarterback Joe Cox. Davis has been relatively quiet so far, with only three tackles this season, so expect him to look to breakout.
