Volleyball set to continue SEC play

By on September 25, 2009

The Georgia volleyball team looks to continue its winning ways during a four-game homestand in Athens this weekend.

The Bulldogs (10-3, 1-1 SEC) opened the homestand with a victory against Western Carolina on Wednesday night and now turn their focus toward Southeastern Conference play and more specifically Lousiana State.

LSU (7-4, 1-1 SEC) holds a 24-19 series lead against Georgia following a 3-1 defeat of the Bulldogs coming last season in Baton Rouge, La.

Georgia’s last victory in the series against LSU came in Athens last season just one month before that 3-1 defeat – the Bulldogs swept the Tigers with set scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-16.

As Georgia heads into the bulk of its conference schedule, certain players are becoming dependable offensive threats and will be counted on over the course of the season to provide easy points for the Georgia offense.

Junior outside hitter Erika Clark and junior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez are two of those players.

“After a Friday night when she was very disappointed in Tuscaloosa, she made an internal commitment with her game to right the ship and do more than just get her game back in order but actually lead us everywhere, not just offensively,” head coach Joel McCartney said. “She does so much for us and sets our offense free . last Sunday against Mississippi State we rode the ‘Vali-Train’ and didn’t have to get off.”

Clark currently leads the team in kills with 150 and attacks with 408 while Gonzalez leads the Bulldogs with 19 aces and 57 blocks.

This four-game home stand will be the second longest of 2009 for the Bulldogs and the team is thankful for it following their longest road trip of the season last week.

“It’s always really exciting to be back home with our fans in our gym like we’re used to,” Gonzalez said. “I guess it’s just a different kind of vibe coming from our gym like we own this and we need to step up and do our job.”

First serve is set for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ramsey Student Center with the first 250 fans to receive “Beat LSU” T-shirts.
