Crime notebook: Student wrestles, runs from officer
A University student was arrested and charged with seven crimes early Friday morning.
According to the University Police report, Samuel O’Neal Weaver, 18, was arrested and charged with a felony for obstructing or hindering a law enforcement officer early Friday morning when an officer saw him run in the middle of Lumpkin Street traffic.
According to the report:
When the officer stopped him, Weaver gave the officer a fake Florida ID card. The officer noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, and asked for a real ID.
Weaver said he didn’t have one, but gave the officer his real name and date of birth.
While the officer confirmed this information, Weaver ran away down Hull Street behind the Sigma Chi fraternity house.
The officer momentarily lost sight of Weaver, then saw him trying to blend in with a crowd of pedestrians.
When the officer ordered him to stop, Weaver briefly wrestled with the officer, pushing him to the ground and running away. The fall caused the officer to sprain a finger and cut his arm and hand.
Eventually, another officer saw Weaver running in the Tau Epsilon Phi parking lot and placed him in custody. Weaver was charged with simple battery on a police officer, misdemeanor possession of a fake ID, underage possession of alcohol, giving false information, pedestrian on highway and injured person.
