Dogs respond after taking first loss in soccer
It was a weekend of highs and lows for the No. 8 Georgia soccer team, who hit the road for two matches to kick off the all-important Southeastern Conference schedule.
In the second leg of their two-game SEC weekend road trip, the Bulldogs (8-1-1, 1-1-0 SEC) rebounded from Friday night’s lopsided defeat to Louisiana State to take down Arkansas 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville, earning their first SEC victory of the season.
Both squads entered Sunday’s showdown after suffering their first losses of the season less than 48 hours earlier, as the Razorbacks (6-2-2, 0-2-0) were taken down 1-0 by Tennessee in Fayetteville and the Bulldogs suffered a 6-0 loss at LSU.
This time around, the Bulldogs were the ones getting on the score sheet early. In the fourth minute, midfielder Rebekah Perry assisted fellow midfielder Jamie Pollock, who found the back of the net for the sixth time this season, tying forward Carrie Patterson for the team lead.
The Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas, outshooting the Razorbacks 12-1 in the first half but entered the second half with just one goal to show for their offensive efforts.
It was a busy afternoon for Arkansas goalkeeper Britni Williams, who was forced to make eight stops, as the Dogs went on to outshoot the Razorbacks 20-5.
The Bulldogs didn’t strike again until the 80th minute when midfielder Mariah Krase assisted Marah Falle, who added an insurance goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 5-0-1 all-time in Fayetteville and earned their fourth win in the last five games against the Razorbacks.
Sunday’s win was a welcome show of resolve from the Dogs after the bumpy start the squad got off to in their SEC opener Friday night.
LSU hammered the Bulldogs in Baton Rouge, handing the previously undefeated Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
The loss ended the team’s five-game winning streak and was the steepest margin of defeat for the Bulldogs since the 2001 squad was drubbed 7-0 at the hands of then No.1 ranked North Carolina.
Much like last Friday’s match against Clemson, the Bulldogs found themselves playing catch-up early after LSU’s Carlie Banks netted a third minute goal to give the Tigers the early lead. On this night, however, the Bulldogs were never able to claw their way back into the match.
The Bulldogs have another busy weekend ahead of them, finishing off a six-game road trip with matches at Kentucky on Friday and at Vanderbilt on Sunday, before returning home Oct. 9 to face Ole Miss
