It was a disappointing afternoon for the Georgia volleyball team as they were swept by visiting Louisiana State on Sunday.

“I am so disappointed in the outcome of this match for as hard as our girls were playing in that second and third set,” head coach Joel McCartney said. “To walk away from this match with a three-set loss is certainly disappointing . we deserved more than that today, I thought.”

The Bulldogs (10-4, 1-2 SEC) were completely dominated in the opening set by a score of 25-13 as the Tigers (9-4, 3-1) posted a remarkable .394 hitting percentage and held Georgia to just seven kills.

After McCartney took the opportunity during the first set break to huddle the team together and make some defensive adjustments, the Bulldogs started the second set on a 4-0 run and looked to be poised to even the match up at a set apiece.

However, the Tigers battled back to force the set into overtime and ultimately outlasted Georgia by a score of 30-28.

Eight ties and three lead changes along with a number of lengthy rallies kept the 1,243 in attendance on their feet throughout the entire set, but LSU senior outside hitter Maria Skender’s five kills in the set proved to be too much for the Bulldogs.

Georgia got out to a 13-8 lead in the third and final set but were unable to close the door as LSU came back and won the set by a score of 25-22.

A combined 21 ties and eight lead changes made Sunday’s match one of the more competitive of the season for Georgia thus far, and although it ended up on the losing end, McCartney wasn’t upset.

“You lose 25-13 and nothing seems to be going right for you and you don’t feel like your team is engaged in the match and if the wheels fall off and you walk away with your head down, but that’s not what happened today,” McCartney said. “There’s some silver lining in there and that’s the character of the group I have to work with.”
