Mama’s Love band brings classic sound to Tasty World
Being a called a “mama’s boy” is seldom flattering, but, according to Thomas Galloway, it definitely should be – even for rock musicians.
“A mother’s love is the highest form of unconditional love,” he said. “You can definitely print that.”
Galloway’s band, Mama’s Love, based their name off of a sandwich from a store in Auburn, Ala., but that doesn’t mean the name doesn’t contain deeper meaning.
“A couple of the band mates mentioned that name-and it felt right,” Galloway said. “It gave a warm feeling inside. It sounds pleasant, nice and warm.”
The feeling is echoed through the band’s music. Mama’s Love sports a comfortable, classic sound that contains memories of a purer time in rock.
“A lot of people label us jam band, and it can be annoying at times, but there is a lot of structure – we are trying to bring back old school classic rock to modern listeners,” Galloway said.
Mama’s Love consists of Galloway (lead vocals), William Boyd (keyboards), Bo Nicholson (bass), Whit Murray (lead guitar) and Ben Torbet (drums). Galloway, Boyd and Torbet have been playing together for three to four years, but this past year some changes have been made.
“We had some changes this summer. This new group has been playing consistently for three or four months,” Galloway said.
No matter the switch-around of band mates, the group still finds music making easy as a mother’s love.
“I guess it’s just kind of our own taste in music. We all do songwriting, but we get inspiration and we just go with it,” Galloway said. “When it comes to inspiration, we are each other’s influences. We are constantly changing each other’s taste.”
Despite his best efforts, Galloway’s love for his craft and band members give him away: a true mama’s boy-or maybe just raised well. Mama’s Love will play songs created from an album produced in 2007 this Friday at Tasty World, but in December it plans to record a sophomore album.
