Linebacker Darryl Gamble returned two interceptions for touchdowns and made a career-high 13 tackles against LSU last year in Baton Rouge. The Bulldogs and fourth-ranked Tigers meet up again Saturday.

Georgia linebacker Darryl Gamble erased the question mark following his name with his performance in the 52-38 shootout victory over LSU last year.

Previously seeing limited playing time, Gamble entrenched himself in Georgia’s rotation after the trip to Baton Rouge.

The Bainbridge native returned an interception for a touchdown on the first play of the game, and took another pick to the end zone in the fourth quarter. He also had 13 tackles, completing a dominating performance.

Can Gamble replicate last season’s defensive playmaking against the Tigers?

“People have been asking about it, saying like, ‘DG, what are you going to do?’ I don’t know, we’ll just have to see about it,” he said. “I’ve been putting in my work in the film and working out a little harder. Just whatever happens, happens. I’m looking forward to a big game and we’ll see if it happens.”

The Bulldogs’ defense will seek to force turnovers Saturday, a feat that hasn’t occurred often this season. Georgia has only two interceptions and one fumble recovered in 2009.

“The opportunities will be there, we just haven’t made a lot,” said Gamble, who noted he missed a chance for an interception against Oklahoma State.

THE LAST TIME:
GEORGIA-LSU, 2008

The rankings: No. 9 Georgia at No. 11 LSU
The records: Georgia: 6-1, 3-1 SEC
LSU: 5-1, 3-1 SEC
The stars: Georgia’s Darryl Gamble returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including one on the opening play of the game, as the Tigers hung around but the Bulldogs seemed in control for most of their eventual 52-38 win. Matthew Stafford threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns, and LSU’s Brandon LaFell reeled in two scores.

“We’ve had a lot of plays the past four games where we could have had plenty of turnovers, we just haven’t made plays on the ball, really.”

Georgia defenders recall the momentum swing Gamble’s interceptions had last year, and are looking for a similar play Saturday.

“It was very energetic going into that place,” said defensive end Demarcus Dobbs. “The fans were crazy as usual. But from the first play from scrimmage, the defense took a pick to the house and that set the tone for that game, and hopefully we can do that again this year.”

Added Gamble: “Always when the defense gets a turnover, and even when the defense scores, it’s a boost to the team. We’re coming in at home with a little momentum. Especially if we’re on defense first, if we stop them or get a turnover, that’s going to drive the team to do better.”
