Soccer team tops Kentucky, looks to Vandy

By on October 4, 2009

The No. 21 Georgia soccer team wraps up its weekend road trip and plays its sixth straight game on the road Sunday when it travels to Nashville to take on SEC rival Vanderbilt at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex at 3 p.m. EST.

The Bulldogs first headed to Lexington, Ky., Friday night, where the squad came away with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Alex Hooker’s game-winner with just 5:30 remaining in the contest.

The win moved UGA to 9-1-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in conference play, as the Bulldogs stand in third place in the SEC’s Eastern Division behind South Carolina (3-0-0) and Florida (2-0-1).

Georgia is now 4-1 on the road swing going back to Sept. 13.

“I was really pleased with how we managed the game against Kentucky and stayed the course throughout the 90 minutes,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “We needed a moment of magic or something special and we were able to find that when [Leslie] McConnell’s service found Hooker for the goal. Winning on the road is never easy and we cherished the result in Lexington.”

Georgia will be going up against a Vanderbilt team that defeated in-state rival Tennessee, 1-0, on Friday in overtime. The Commodores (7-3-1, 1-2-0) received the game-winner by Molly Kinsella in the 95th minute to defeat the Lady Vols. Kinsella leads Vanderbilt with her 18 points, coming on five goals and an SEC-best eight assists. Teammate Nicole Lukens has 13 points on the season (6g, 1a), while seven other players have found the back of the net for Vandy.

Keeper Rachel Bachtel has started all 11 games, logging 930:35 minutes with a 1.06 goals-against average. Bachtel has roped in 38 saves and has three shutouts to her name.

“We have the utmost respect for Vanderbilt and they are coming off a very impressive win over Tennessee. They have a number of attacking personalities and we will have our hands full defending them. We fully understand the importance of this game and hopefully we can put another good performance together on Sunday afternoon.”

In the all-time series between the conference foes, Vanderbilt owns a 9-7 edge in the series, although the Dogs have won the last two meetings including a 2-1 victory last season in Athens, Ga. Georgia is 3-4 all-time when playing in Nashville.

For the Bulldogs, senior Carrie Patterson and sophomore Jamie Pollock are tied for the team lead in goals with six apiece. A total of 10 different players have scored for Georgia, which is outscoring its opponents 24-10 through the first 11 games. Defensively, Georgia is holding opponents to just 7.0 shots per game, while veteran keeper Michelle Betos – with a 0.96 goals-against average – has notched five shutouts.

“We’re hoping to continue our winning record in SEC play,” said junior Ashley Miller. “We’re looking for a big result tomorrow – it would be a big win for us. These games are getting us prepared for later in the season, and we know we’re going to play our best soccer then.”
