Volleyball squad falls to Arkansas
The Georgia volleyball team fell to Arkansas, 3-0, on Friday evening at the Ramsey Student Center.
Arkansas earned the 3-0 win with set scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-20 to improve to 8-8 overall on the year and 2-3 in Southeastern Conference play. The Bulldogs dropped to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in league action.
“Incredibility disappointing reaction from our team tonight,” Georgia head coach Joel McCartney said. “I’m angry with this result, and most of the time I’d say it’s just the result, but quite honestly, I’m really confused with the reaction that we had in this match. There was not much fight in us at all, not even in the third set which looked more competitive for us. That is not characteristic of what we’ve been doing. Even if we’ve lost this season, it’s been characteristic that we’ve battled in the match to get it right. That is now what happened tonight, and that’s incredibility frustrating. We will take that into tomorrow and get right back to it. It’s a grind. Every team in the SEC is going to come battling for wins, and this is a much improved Arkansas team that we just did not get up for tonight and did not respond to well at all.”
The Razorbacks led the Bulldogs in the match both on the offensive side of the net as well as defensively. Arkansas recorded 36 kills on a .237 hitting percentage while Georgia tallied 31 kills on a .118 clip, and the Razorbacks topped Georgia with 9.0 blocks and 36 digs compared to the Bulldogs 5.0 blocks and 33 digs. UGA held a slight edge in service aces at 5-3.
Arkansas was led by a double-double performance from Jasmine Norton as she recorded a match-best 10 kills and 12 digs. Her effort was supported by nine kills from Kelli Stipanovich and 11 digs from libero Phoebe Bautista.
For the Bulldogs, junior outside hitter Erika Clark provided a team-best eight kills while redshirt freshman opposite hitter Briana Bahr notched eight and junior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez added six. Defensively, sophomore libero Carla Tietz recorded a team-best 11 digs.
Georgia returns to action on Sunday when it concludes a four-match home stand against Ole Miss. First serve against the Rebels (6-9, 0-5 SEC) is slated for 1:30 p.m. ET.
“Sunday against Ole Miss begins right now for me,” McCartney declared. “I’m going home with film, and I’m going to stay up as late as I have to in order to make sure we know everything that they do. We’ve been working all week on that, but I feel like I’ve got to invest more and work harder if I’m going to ask everybody else to invest more and work hard. We need to step up and play Sunday for sure.”
