Soccer collects two SEC wins

By on October 5, 2009

Defense was the name of the game for the No. 21-ranked Georgia women’s soccer team this weekend, as the Dogs wrapped up a six-game road swing with consecutive shutout wins at Vanderbilt (7-4-1, 1-3-0 SEC) Sunday and Kentucky (3-5-3, 0-3-3 SEC) on Friday.

With the wins, the Bulldogs continued their stunning form in SEC road contests, improving to 11-2-2 dating back to the 2007 season.

The Dogs (10-1-1, 3-1-0 SEC) were firing on all cylinders offensively Sunday, taking down the Commodores 3-0 in Nashville to hand Vanderbilt their first home loss of the season and complete their road trip at an impressive 5-1-0 mark.

Senior Natalie Farley broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, netting her second goal of the season to put the Bulldogs in front 1-0.

Both keepers were busy throughout the match, as the Bulldogs outshot the Commodores 18-13, forcing Vanderbilt goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel to make seven saves, while Georgia keeper Michelle Betos made six stops to preserve the shutout, her sixth on the season.

The Bulldogs later received insurance goals, the first coming in the 64th minute courtesy of junior midfielder Caroline Simpson and another at the 79 minute mark from redshirt sophomore forward Alex Hooker.

Hooker’s goal was her second on the weekend road trip. Friday night, it was Hooker’s heroics that lifted the Bulldogs past the Kentucky Wildcats 1-0 in Lexington in the final minutes of play.

After nearly 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, Hooker broke free of the Kentucky defense thanks to a pass from defender Leslie McConnell before sending the ball into the back of the net. The Georgia defense looked steady once again, fending off threatening advances by the Wildcats in the final minutes to secure the win.

With the weekend’s victories, Georgia assumes third place in the tight Southeastern Conference after the 7th-ranked Florida Gators (8-4-1, 2-1-1) fell to Ole Miss 3-2 in double overtime Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs 10-1-1 record ties the best 12-game mark in program history set by the 2007 Bulldogs, who navigated their way to the SEC Championship game. The Bulldogs next face Ole Miss Friday night at 7.
