Sophomore golfer Marta Silva Zamora won her second tournament of the year when she finished 4-under-par at the Eat A Peach Collegiates.

Marta Silva Zamora won the SEC Championships as a true freshman last year – a rarity in college golf. And she doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, as she won the Eat A Peach Collegiate Monday. This was her second win out of the three stroke-play events the Lady Dogs have competed in this fall.

“She’s awfully good,” Kelly Hester, head coach for the women’s golf team, said of her sophomore sensation. “She just was steady. Two-under-par on that golf course today was very impressive with how nasty the conditions were.”

“It feels awesome to win today,” Silva Zamora said. “I putted really well today, and I didn’t do anything crazy.”

As for her explanation as to how she’s been able to achieve such tremendous success in less than a year and a half in Athens, she showed the humility that makes her special.

“I think that I just get lucky,” Silva Zamora said. “I really can’t explain it. It’s just how I play and I have played well.”

Silva Zamora’s 4-under-par two-day total not only helped her earn a two-shot victory but also propelled the Lady Dogs to a one-shot victory in the team competition over runner-up Florida State. This victory was also Georgia’s second team win of the fall.

Despite the Lady Dogs’ starting their round 10 shots back of first-round leader FSU, they quickly rallied, tying the Seminoles after 18 holes. Unfortunately for the Seminoles, one of their players signed her score card for one stroke more than she shot, resulting in the Dogs one-shot victory and a reprieve from a possible playoff.

“I’m really proud of them,” Hester said of her team’s win. “It was hard today. It rained pretty much all day and it rained really hard on the front nine. Marta’s 70 was just awesome, but we’re probably the only team in the field that didn’t have a score in the 80s.”

Senior Carolina Andrade had a monumental week as well, posting the best finish of her career as a Dog – a tie for sixth at 5-over-par 149.

“She was just really steady. Believe it or not, she struggled with some short putts, both days even, but was just very steady and hung in there and played strong,” Hester said.

Making the Dogs’ victory even more impressive is the fact that they did it without sophomore Milena Savich, who has been great to this point in the season but had to sit out the weekend with the flu.

“That means we have a really strong team,” Silva Zamora said about winning without one of their top three players. “We don’t have only five good players, so it’s good to know that we have the depth this year that we can still win if someone can’t play.”
