Caleb King will miss some time with a broken jaw and concussion but the injuries should not keep him out more than a week or two.

Caleb King is hurt again, this time with a fractured jaw and a concussion.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Tuesday he wasn’t sure which hit injured the redshirt sophomore tailback Saturday against LSU, but the likely suspect is a big hit he took on the fourth-quarter drive that found A.J. Green in the end zone.

“This is a [fracture] the doctors don’t feel will need any type of surgery, and actually, they feel like relatively soon we can protect him to the point where he can play,” Richt said. “So it’s not season-ending by any stretch. It might be a stretch to say this week, but we’re not really counting that out.”

After missing several games with a hamstring injury sustained in fall camp, King returned for Georgia’s game with Arkansas in Week 3. He has rushed for 121 yards on 30 attempts since then.

Richt said that, at this point, the concussion was more of a concern, and said that sophomore Richard Samuel will likely get the start at tailback this week at Tennessee.

“[King] can’t do anything until the concussion symptoms clear,” Richt said. “As soon as they clear, I think they would let him practice immediately with the no-contact and they might OK him to play as early as this week. I don’t think that’s out of the question, but it’s probably not likely.”

If anything, King picked a good time to get hurt, after freshman Washaun Ealey burned his redshirt Saturday, getting the ball eight times for 33-yards.

“If they give me a chance to play Saturday, I’m just going to take it and run hard,” Ealey said.

Georgia’s running game has yet to assert itself this season, averaging an SEC-worst 98.8 yards per game.

“It’s encouraging to know that although we still have a lot to improve on, if we put it all together, I think we will have something pretty special,” said fullback Shaun Chapas. “So it is something we strive to do and we are going to try and put everything together.”

Speaking of concussion …

Much of the talk in the college football world has centered around Tim Tebow since he sustained a concussion two weekends ago against Kentucky.

It’s still up in the air whether the Florida quarterback will take the field against the LSU team that bested Georgia last week. Naturally, the Tebow concussion discussion isn’t foreign to Athens either.

“Whoever gave up that block is about to get it,” Green said. “It’s not good to be him right now. I thought [Tebow's] neck was broken or something. If that was somebody else they’d probably be out for the season, but that’s Tebow man. He’ll come back probably [this week], play against LSU and have another great game.”

Dowtin out this week with torn finger ligament

Sophomore linebacker Marcus Dowtin had surgery on his left ring finger Sunday and will be out for Saturday’s game against Tennessee, he said Tuesday.

Dowtin, who didn’t participate in practice Tuesday, wasn’t sure what play against LSU did the damage, but he expects to be back in two weeks for Georgia’s trip to Vanderbilt.

“I’m pretty much out for this week, I’ll be back for next week though for sure,” Dowtin said. “It’s pretty much the same rotation. Christian Robinson, Nick Williams, Michael Gilliard, they’ve all been rotating in. [Linebackers coach John Jancek] does a good job of keeping a consistent rotation, so you never know who’s going to play.”

Dowtin, who started at middle linebacker against South Carolina and Arkansas earlier this season, is the Bulldogs’ leading tackler among players who haven’t started all five games with 26.

Captains named for Saturday

Before practice Tuesday, Richt informed the team of the captains for Saturday’s contest against Tennessee. Shaun Chapas will be captain of the offense, Rennie Curran and Jeff Owens will represent the defense and Drew Butler will captain the special teams.
