Oct. 7, 1983
The Red & Black reported the owner of Bourbon Street was debating continuing the fight after the establishment’s liquor licence was revoked for 30 days. Nude dancers – hired to offset fewer bar patrons because of cable TV’s rising influence – went against a city ordinance that prohibited topless or nude dancing at establishments that served alcohol.

Oct. 7, 1987
The University announced a new party policy for student organizations after Lambda Chi was stripped of Interfraternity Council voting and block seating privileges. The fraternity held an event that ushered in stricter guidelines, including attendee restrictions and a 12:30 a.m. weekend curfew for social events.

Oct. 7, 1998
Accusations and demands for apologies traveled between Athens and Portland, Ore., after University soccer player Jan Lewis punched an opponent, causing a concussion and knocking her unconscious. Lewis was indefinitely suspended from the team

Oct. 7, 2001
American and British forces launched an attack against Osama bin Laden and the Taliban, hitting terrorist training camps and other targets. The attack sparked reactions from students and professors, one of whom predicted the strike would probably not “escalate to the level of the Gulf War.”

Oct. 7, 2002
Nearly 50 students and residents of Athens gathered at the Arch to protest the possibility of military action in Iraq. At the rally, protesters outlined their bodies in chalk to represent potential casualties that could result from the then-possible war.
