Trivia by the people, for the people
Which planet has the most moons?
Those unsure of the correct answer can make a reasonable guess (Saturn?), but trying for a your-mom-joke may result in bonus points – so players who are unsure of the correct answer (Jupiter) still have a fighting chance in 283′s Trivia Wars.
“I help manage 283 and had been going to different trivia nights at different places,” said Rachel Barnes, a child and family development major and bar manager at 283. “I felt like they could be more fun and more personal, so I contacted Chris Creech; he has taken it and ran with it. It was my idea to do a trivia night and he took it to a whole new level.”
Even if just for its size, trivia at 283 is different than at restaurants around town because it is a smaller venue that allows the host and contestants to interact personally and crack a few jokes.
Trivia Wars’ humor and unique questions include the whole audience, not just those answering questions. “Many bars have trivia, but this is different,” Chris Creech, the trivia emcee, said. “Most bars’ trivia nights aren’t very fun. The questions, usually sports related, are aimed at men, even though at least half of the audience is women. I ask various questions about history, current events, always sex, rock, movies, space, popular music.” 283′s most recent theme was “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll.”
“He asks 20 questions, some racy, some pop culture related” said Joel Martin, a University alumnus and bartender.
Creech does his own research and writes all of his own questions.
“My questions are from scratch. I modify other questions but all mine are original. One particular night the theme will be ‘Drinking, Smoking, Screwing’ and I will throw in questions about different kinds of screws, BBQ, and non – alcoholic beverages.”
During the month of October, 283 is hosting a tournament with prizes including gift certificates for tattoos, Ike and Jane doughnuts and Dynamite, and origami lampshades created by Creech.
Tonight’s theme is “Earth, Wind and Fire.”
