Despite criticism, Cox remains at QB
For better or worse, quarterbacks wallow in criticism after losses and live in splendor following wins.
That’s just the nature of the position – something Georgia’s Joe Cox understands.
“It’s fine,” he said. “Once you lose your confidence that can start a whole new world of trouble.”
Cox, who threw for 146 yards and two interceptions, deserves his share of the blame for offensive woes in the 45-19 loss to Tennessee.
But Richt said there would be no “knee-jerk” reactions made regarding quarterback, or any position.
With the Bulldogs falling to 3-3 critics have questioned Cox’s validity as a starter, and wondered if playing sophomore Logan Gray or freshmen Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger would better serve Georgia in the long-run.
Richt says he is only concerned with putting the best product on the field to beat Vanderbilt this weekend, and his comments indicated Cox isn’t losing the job anytime soon.
“[Murray and Mettenberger] could function with a certain percentage of what we’re doing, but it’s a matter of deciding whether you want to do that,” he said.
Expect Rambo’s role to increase
Through his limited play this season, safety Bacarri Rambo has proclaimed himself a prominent playmaker on defense.
“Rambo is beginning to play well and earn more playing time,” Richt said. “He needs to play more. As a matter of fact, when it comes to safety play, we probably need to do more of a three-man rotation between Rambo and Bryan [Evans] and Reshad [Jones]. Rambo kind of subbed for Bryan but we really didn’t sub Reshad.”
