With her first career collegiate goal, freshman Laura Eddy sealed a come-from-behind win Sunday afternoon for Georgia soccer, who rebounded from a tough loss to #24 Ole Miss Friday night to earn a hard fought 2-1 win over Mississippi State.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs(11-2-1, 4-2-0 SEC) found themselves trailing early after Mississippi State’s Kat Walsh netted her eighth goal of the season in the 17th minute. Walsh was left open at the top of the Bulldog’s box before turning and firing a well-placed shot into the top-left corner, putting MSU in front 1-0.

The Dogs continued to pepper the Mississippi State (8-4-2, 0-4-2) goal with shots in the second half, firing 11 shots compared to two from the visiting Bulldogs. However, Georgia continued to struggle to find an equalizer.

With 28:25 left in the match, Ashley Miller fired a shot that ricocheted off the left post but no one was able to collect the rebound. Ten minutes later Eddy fired a laser from 20 yards out that bounced off the crossbar and was cleared by Mississippi State.

Georgia finally found the back of the net in the 75th minute, as Alex Hooker fired a rocket from the top of the 18-yard box into the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game at one goal apiece.

For the go-ahead goal, Eddy collected a clearance off a Kelli Corless corner kick and fired a shot that made its way through a sea of MSU defenders into the net to put the Bulldogs on top for good, 2-1.

After her first career goal ended up being a game winner, Eddy was at a loss for words after the match.

“It was just so exciting but, you know, in the middle of the game I had to just refocus right away but it felt really good,” said Eddy.

The win was an important one for the Bulldogs, who came into Sunday’s match after a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Ole Miss Friday night, in which the offense failed to pull even with the Rebels despite a number of promising second half chances.

“I’m just really proud of our team for coming out and putting Friday behind us,” Carrie Patterson said.

Despite Friday’s loss, the Bulldogs continue to impress at home, having allowed one goal or less in 11 straight matches at the UGA Soccer Stadium.

“The team showed great resolve and a great commitment to playing good soccer [today] just like we did on Friday,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “You know we felt like, because we were creating so many good chances, if we could get the equalizer that the second [goal] might be there and, sure enough, it was.”
