How are drafted Dogs’ doing in the NFL

By on October 13, 2009

Georgia football took a major hit when three of its players (Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, and Asher Allen) departed early for the pros. Here’s a look at how they are doing in the NFL:

Matthew Stafford:
Drafted No. 1 overall by the Detroit Lions, Stafford was named the starter out of preseason camp. Stafford started the first four games of the season, compiling 894 yards passing and three touchdowns, while also throwing six interceptions.

Stafford injured his right knee near the end of the fourth game of the season against the Chicago Bears, but not before going 24-of-36 for 296 yards and a touchdown. He sat out the rest of that game and did not play in the Lions’ fifth game against Pittsburgh, and his status is not clear for this week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Knowshon Moreno:
Many experts scratched their heads when the Denver Broncos took Moreno with the No. 12 pick in the draft, but he has proven them wrong so far. Moreno leads the Broncos in rushing with 318 yards on 73 carries and an average of 79.5 yards a game.

This past week, Moreno was a large part of the Broncos’ victory over New England – a win that kept Denver perfect on the season at 5-0. In that game, Moreno rushed 21 times for 88 yards, while compiling 33 yards receiving. Moreno’s high rushing game of the season came against Oakland in the third week of the season, when he rushed 21 times for 90 yards.

Asher Allen:
Though drafted fairly high for his size as a cornerback, the Minnesota Vikings took a chance with Allen, drafting him in the third round, No. 86 overall. Allen has not played in a regular season game and was put on the team’s practice squad. He might have been best suited to stay one more year.
